Intrigued by the software platform Google QuickDraw Rauch and Gay embarked upon a collaborative research project that took as its starting point our curiosity around training a drawing AI system for some kind of creative use.
As visual artists/creative makers and as researchers interested in the impact of technologies on creativity and studio work, we tease out aspects of this deceptively simple project through acts of drawing and collaging, and thinking critically about some of the implications of human-machine collaborations in creative projects.

Our interest is to think about the “politics” of datasets – do categories have politics and do artefacts have politics – as Lucy Suchman and Langdon Winner ask. We ask, what is data and what is its politics? How do critical arts practices work to complicate algorithmic logic and question practices of optimization through data?
